odd feeding behavior

vampiresaru Feb 16, 2006 03:58 PM

I have a few concerns here so I'll start this with a preface... I have a 5 year old gecko I rescued around this time last year and when I got her the owners said she only ate like 2-3 crickets ever 2 days. Well the day after I got her all settled in her new home i tried feeding her and she put down 12 crickets no problem. I found out the previous owners kept things too cold and never had a humid hide (she's missing toes as a result) but she's been happy and healthy since then eating 10-12 crickets or mealies every 2-3 days.

For a few weeks now she hasn't been eating though. She went 2 weeks without a meal and now only eats 1 or 2 mealies every 2 or 3 days. Her heat pad was malfunctioning and the temp was a bit low (night time temps) but that has been fixed for just over a week so its 90 on the hot and 75 on the cool. She hasn't visably lost weight. I am going to try to switch her back to crickets this weekend and see if that helps (she stopped going after crickets in june so i switched to the mealies) but I am a little concerned about the lack of eating.

I though she was doing better this morning. When I got up she came out with her tail wagging like she was hungry so i put some mealies in there and she went right to hunting...but once again she didn't eat instead she hunted them all down, killed them and kinda piled them up. This leads me to a second concern she has never done this before, is it a normal kind of behavior?

any insight on these to issues would be greatly apreciated.

I'll tackle the last one first. I have a female that will eat until full and kill anything else left. She loves doing this so much that after she is full I take her out so her cagemates eat the rest without them going to waste.

Have you had a fecal done on her? I would start with that. Has she been with any males? If she was bred and is gravid she may stop eating near lay time.

Mix up the food. Sometimes they get stuck in a rut with the food and are not happy about it and want a change, so they stop eating, until you give them something else.

she has not been around any males so thats out... If she doesn't eat the crickets this weekend I will get a fecal done on her. Other then the lack of apetite she seems to be doing fine, she's active and comes out to say hi when she sees me. She also has a thing for trying to ride around on my dog's head...she sees him and runs towards him, the few times i let her go she just sits on his head like she's commanding him (^_^)

AAWWW, cute. My dog runs from the geckos...LOL When he was little my first gecko at about 4 months old and him were introduced and the gecko hissed and lundged at the dog. LOL The dog won't come near me when I've got a gecko in my hand now. LOL You should see him, 35 lb dog vs. 60 gram gecko....and even the smaller ones too.
