the guy who breeds my rats called me last week in a panic...his wife had discovered his vacuum packed rats in the garage freezer...He begged me to come clear them out immediately. Apparantly, either he could stay or the rats, but not both!

Now the rats on in my freezer, on top of the chicken, under the corn dogs!

Hubby really dislikes the idea of rodents next to his ice cream LOL, so I did get a second freezer, need it too between the rodents couple hundred usually at a time and the dog food I can easily fill my second freezer without anything but pet food!

compartmentalize~ (SP?)

Any way~ I keep all the food for human consumption on the top three shelves of the freezer~ and the bottom shelf is for snake food. That way no one worries if something doesn't get bagged up properly (though I am very carefull to vacuum pack them) there is no issue of gravity dropping the reptile food onto the people food. Though I did find some chicken nuggets in the reptile food recently~ one of the kids must not have closed THAT bag properly and gravity brought the people food to contaminate my reptile food!!

Not in cubes though, I buy Mountain Dog Food and it is ground up bone and all beef, chicken or turkey. We use the beef and veg mix and chicken with bone in mix for our girl. She loves it and less poop to clean, nicer coat and gorgeous teeth. Plus she hates kibble They couldn't get her to eat at the rescue shelter cause that is what they fed. She also get things like raw eggs, cheese and yogurt occasionally, kelp essential oils mixed in daily and stuff to balance everything out but. My dog probably eats a more balanced healthy diet than I do :D LOL, that goes for all my animals. But then they don't mind eating the same thing all the time.

I love rabbit Hubby would never eat it, very healthy though. Hospitals used to use rabbit for patients with digestive problems. We like horsemeat though, mmmmmmmm smoked on a sandwich with Gouda cheese is the best, had bear didn't like it. Deer I like but I have to marinate the steaks, too wild tasting otherwise. Love deer sausage but that is cause it is usually cut with ground pork. No hunters in the family though so we don't get it much

Look for a dutch deli store. A little place called Bens Meat and Deli here carries it. It is a delicacy for the dutch.

My grandparents always went to this place. They have all the dutch candies and treats, real Gouda and all the traditional meats, not to mention the best beef jerky in the world LOL, you ever come up to Edmonton and you'll have to stop in.

As long as you're eating rodents, you need to come to Louisiana for some nutria. Nutria look something like beavers but have a tail more like that of a possum than a beaver. They were brought to this country in the 20's or 30's to be raised for their fur. The folks who had them were the same ones who make Tabasco sauce.

In 1934, we had a hurricane, and the cage where they were keeping the nutria flooded. Nutria are great swimmers, and as the water rose, they just kept swimming. When the water rose over the top of the cage, they swam away. They've been in Louisiana ever since. The Cajuns say that nutria make pretty good eating, but I've not had the pleasure of eating one yet.

They are actually something of a problem here. They eat plants to the root and will kill off large areas of swamps. They dig in the levees and cause the levees to weaken. I'm sure that the alligators get some of them, but they don't get enough. Some old-time Cajuns trap them for food, but there isn't a market for their fur anymore. Without that market, they aren't hunted enough to keep the populations down or wipe them out. There's a bounty on them or at least there's been a bounty in the past, but no one makes that big an effort to kill and collect.

I've seen them a bit when I've been out kayaking. Supposedly, they are aggressive, but they've never bothered me. I think it's neat to see them, but knowing that they are an invasive species and a pest takes some of the joy. I've never tried hitting one with a paddle and am probably not fast enough to do so. I guess I could take a .22 and try to kill some, but I just can't get into carrying another piece of equipment when I paddle.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.
