Tortoise Pen or Tortoise Table or ???

JustinM. Feb 16, 2006 04:46 PM

So, I have a nice-sized juvenile Burmese mtn. tortoise. I was thinking about building a tortoise cage, but I now find myself perplexed???

How would someone build a tortoise cage for a tropical species that can provide high humdity without an open top that lets humdity evaporate quickly? In other words, how do you build a tortoise table for a humdity loving species???

I was thinking about getting a large Vision tortoise tub from Bush herpetoligical supply...but, it seems their website is no longer up at: www.bushherp.com???

Even if I build a "pen" in the future...wood is not an ideal material to build the structure of a said "pen". In everyone's experience, what works for humidity-loving tortsoises and are there any ideas and/or suppliers that sell large tubs made of tough plastic or any other good material???

I appreciate everyone's help/tips/comments/advice. Thanks!

maybe use some plexi glass? I am guessing here.. but my brother made a perfect iguana tank w it once ...I dunno how it would hold up w a tort always pushing on it but maybe?

Just noticed that link was for the small tub, they do make large ones.

So, I guess waterland tubs and Vision tubs are the only option this day in age until I have to further upgrade to an actual pen indoors. Thanks for the help!

My husband built an enclosure for my redfoot tortoises (according to my design) from maple plywood lined and topped with acrylic (lighter than plexiglass and doesn't crack or yellow easily). The dome is supported by wardrobe wire shelfing and covered with loose acrylic panels, that can be opened or closed according to humidity requirements.
The enclosure is equipped with a misting system, UVA and UVB lighting and ceramic heat emitters on thermostats.
If you go for a simpler design (constructing it simply straight instead of this bent unit) it shouldn't be that demanding to build and I can only recommend it, as it works very well technically and looks very pretty on top!
So maybe it is giving you some ideas!
