How Long Have You Been Keeping Box Turtles?

PATMAN Feb 16, 2006 06:25 PM

I bought my first box turtle in September 1984. She was an adult female 3 toed I named "Clyde."

Here it is almost 22 years later and I still have her! Below is a picture of "Clyde" I took last year.

2 years in March a 3 toed male showed up on my front lawn. Actually he was in a hole that I was digging for a pond. Have you experienced any of the problems that are talked about here with Clyde? like parasites, vit a deficiency? I have a broken shell T.c.bauri but otherwise nothing yet. here's a pix./p

My 3 toed had not had any problems in the past 20 years until early this year, when she became sick and ended up with a bacterial infection of the inner ear, which caused a large puss lump on the side of her head.

I lanced it myself (not for the squemish) and now she is healed and back to herself.

Nice Florida box turtle you have there Patsy!

About 6 years ago I acquired my box turtles from my DH's aunt's yard. It is a very long story, so I won't go there. Anyway.....I have had 5 of the box turtles for 6 years, 3 others for 5 years and I now have a very young turtle that was brought to me this year as a hatchling.....thus the 9 turtles. I hope to have them for many years to come.......and when the time comes, I hope one of my children will give them a home for me.
I hope all of you on the board are having a good week-end! .........9boxies

I've lived where ornates roam wild for 34 years, I never had any intentions of keeping any of them as pets.
I got into seriously keeping a pet turtle 12 years ago with my CB western painted who I bought on purpose because I wanted him.

The rest were basically rescues, my yellow mud has been here 10 years now.
The box turtles happened with Shell E being the first to show up here broken & bleeding in 2001. The next year the deformed & gun shot sulcata arrived. After her the box turtles with problems just started showing up.
I think something invisible to the human eye left a sign around my house for animals to read that says if you are in trouble stop here. LOL
That's exactly what our parrot did, she just showed up here & wouldn't leave. :-x

I'll look & see if I can still find the date that you originally sent that photo to me. DH took my old hard drive out & then put his old one into this computer. Before he did he put all my saved photos on CDs I don't know for sure but I don't think they all still have the original download date on them.
I see though that Mikey does kind of have a face like Chips & I never realized either, Mikey looks like he's pretty small in that photo, he must be a fairly young little guy.
