BP Cloaca problem. Please help this time

GoldyGirl Feb 16, 2006 08:16 PM

As I earlier posted, my "Female" bp was very lethargic and cold last night. She was shedding I got her out to check on her. She had some urine stuff stuck in her cloaca so I got a q tip and wet it and got it off. Then these 2 yellow dry but sticky lines of stuff came out. Could these be sperm plugs?? and shes a male?? Also there was a little blood in there..I really would appreciate some help this time..

It's really hard to diagnose over the 'net. But I'll take a stab at it. Lethargic? More than normal? These guys aren't garter snakes. If cold, your temps are probably too low and yes, that would make any cold-blooded reptile lethargic. What are your temps? Day and night.

Stuff stuck in the cloacal opening eh? Not sure without pics. Sometimes a touch of blood is present in that area. If nothing happened to cause it and it goes away after a day and does not return, I would not worry too much but I would continue to monitor.

Not sure about the sex? Have "it" sexed.

Thanks for your reply..I'm not sure how to post pics on here but I checked her last night the blood is gone and everything seems cleared out. What do sperm plugs look like? My temps on the warm side are 85 day 70 night and the other side is about 70 day to no lower than 65 night..She's still shedding and last night she went over to the water dish to soak and have a drink. She seems a little better now I was just extremely worried about her I'm paranoid I guess. Thanks again though

You should provide a temp range: 65 and 70 are too cold and will lead to illness. Your cool day time temp should be around 82 while the warm side should be close to 90-95 (hot spot). As for the nights, you should not be going lower than 78 in the cool end. 85-90 in the warm is fine. Get the temps up!

How long have you had her for, and was she originally a CB or WC. If she was a WC she could have a parasite that would cause the lathargic behavior and limp muscles. How do her stools look are they runny? Sometimes with parasites theyre stools can turn a yellowish color and be stringy or watery (sperm plugs are normally a harder mass that pops out, and its normaly only yellow after it drys, fresh sperm in normally white. If she was a CB she could of gotten a parasite from her meals. Is she still eatng for you? I would raise your temps and keep an eye on her, if things get worse you could try dosing her with a flagill or panicre injection.
I wish you luck with her. Keep us posted.

I could leave their heat lamp on all night that should warm the cage to the right temps. She was cb as far as I know but she was loose in the house for 11 months i finally found her in august. She ate and has gained her weight back since then. But parasites is a possibility since she was out. I can try to find a fresh fecal sample, i work at a vet hospital so i could do a fecal for parasites. I'll try but i dunno if she's going. Last time she ate was January 29th. I haven't fed again since because she's shedding. thanks i will keep you all posted
