No electricity......

pbs Feb 17, 2006 09:55 AM

We are expecting an ice storm this weekend and it's possible the electricity might be out for 3 or 4 maybe even more days. Does any one have any recommendations as to what to do with our reptiles and arachnids??? We have a ball python, a bearded dragon, an anole, and a couple of tarantulas and scorpions. We also have a few kerosene heaters...would they be okay for a few days in a smaller room with one of these to provide heat? Any one that has had to deal with this before, I'd love to know how it went and what you did...any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

I have a motor home with generator, I made some cables to reverse connect it to my house when the power is out. Don't forget to shut off your main breaker. Not exactly to code but works.

BTW, none of the 220 stuff will work unless you have a 220 generator.

Mine is the only house on the block that is lit up during a power outage. Watching TV, running the heater etc.

If you aren't comfortable leaving the snakes in a small room with the kerosene heaters running, another option would be to get a camp stove and use it to heat water. You could then put the hot water in hot water bottles and leave them in the cages. You'd spend a great deal of time heating water, but you could provide enough warmth for your animals to survive.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about putting them in a room with a kerosene heater. When I visit my folks' home and they are running the kerosene heater, the fumes sometimes bother my throat. I don't know how a snake would handle the fumes.

I realize that the weekend has already passed. I'd be interested in hearing how it went for you.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

Thanks Bill, the hot water bottle trick is a great idea. I have heard of using this technique to help puppies, and kittens when taken away from their mother, but I didn't even think about it working for a reptile. Fortunately the weather didn't get bad enough to knock out the electricity so we're all doing fine! But in the future I'll remember this trick!!! Thanks for the idea!!
