Sliding Glass question....

macajuel Feb 17, 2006 10:32 AM

Is it safe to use these w/ larger snakes such as constrictors? Being that they can try to wedge themselve between the 2 paynes(sp.?) and possibly shatter the glass. This question came to mind when my Father-in-law told me he doenst like sliding glass doors because his male 7ft bci did that regularly so he got rid of the doors. We are going to build a large unit but he doesnt want to use these.

Are you saying that your FIL's snake reguarly shattered the glass or reguarly escaped by sliding the doors?

Is this for a BCI or another species?

Regardless, I have read on both the Burmese and Retic forums that regular old plastic glass track is secure enough for both species. I have built sliding glass cages for Boa constrictors and Carpet Pythons but never for an adult Burm/Retic.

There are ways to get tempered glass for track, but it's a bit more tricky to get the polished pencil edge on tempered glass from what I understand. I have never requested this.

There are also tracks where tempered glass can be clamped in and run on sliders of sorts. More expensive and possibly hard to clean.

If this were for a BCI I would just use regular glass track. I much prefer sliding doors. I don't think I'd worry about safety glass, but maybe it is necessary.

For a burm/retic/rock/scrub I'd have to do some serious research.

i have used sliding plexi glass doors for my BCI, including my 7' male for years with absolutely no problems. i use 1/4 plexi and i dont understand how a bci of any age let alone 7' would be able to wedge any part of its body between the two pieces of glass in order to apply any force to it causing it to break. im not calling anyone a lier, but it just doesnt seem possible from what i can tell. personally sliding plexiglass doors are by far my favorite for all cages.

I have used sliding glass with my Burmese and she struck the glass more than once. I don't use tempered glass but they do make safety glass cheaper and just as strong. Comes in 1/4 due to the fact it is two pieces of 1/8 glass fused together.

As far as keeping the panes together a display case lock works really well for that. Although I noticed if the glass overlaps 2" rather than my origional 1" its harder for the snakes to open. Don't ask me why?

Jeremy,

Is the 1/4" safety glass what you use? Are the 1/8" panels used standard double-strength glass? And, if so, can you still get a good polished edge?

I've never used it. Sounds perfect for a taller panel of glass.

Chris,

You know I can't remember that, although I think I remember the glas guy mentioning that. I have to buy glass for some new cages I'll ask then. It is polished and rounded slightly in the corners.

I would assume it would be good for taller panels, it is very heavy however.

I was away for the holidays. Thanks for all of the replys, the data is greatly appreciated. The snake that this question was for a Colombian boa constrictor. And this was only due to the fact that my father in law has more experience in the construction field than me and also has owned his BCI for 15 years. And he used a glass display (the ones you find in jewlry stores) as an enclosure but took out the sliding glass because he said that the snake would wedge it self between the two pieces. I'm all for sliding dorrs but i need to know whats the best kind of glass for a custom enclosure.
