best substrate( dirt mix) for burrowing (5' albig)

DrGonzo Feb 17, 2006 12:33 PM

I need to know what mixes well with dirt to help it hold a good burrow. I have several yards of topsoil, but I think it is a bit of a sand mix as it seemed a bit loose. Help would be great. I will be filling a 4'x3'x3'h box mostly full for a new cage addition. Thanks in advance.

start with 50/50 topsoil and sand, mix well, add water as necessary. we also add vermiculite to the mix, and i like that performance.

I have not had a monitor that large so I didn't feel qualified to respond to the original post. I used Robyn's recomendation for some 3 foot Argus I had, and had great success with burrows in the substrate. Here is a picture of an Argus in the burrow it made. I beleive that is a cinder block to the right of the picture where it's head is.

Can you provide the formula that you use. Also the soil looks moist in the photo. Thanks JT

I just get bags of soil at Home Depot and the finest grain of playsand from the cement isle. I don't have a fomula, I just go by what I think will do the job. I always wet the sand before I mix it with the dirt, then I pack it fairly tight in the enclosure. The deeper it is, the easier it is to burrow in.
