wormer for snakes, have a question about the kind of Paste I Have (NOT BAYTRIL OR PANCUR)

willwoh Feb 17, 2006 06:02 PM

Hey Guys.
I know all about Baytril and Pancur for parasites, which are used as horse wormers. Anyway this is concerning a horse wormer I have never heard about, my father is in the race horse business and uses 2 pastes for cleaning internal parasites one is called Exodus (pyrantel pamoate) Equine Anthelmintic. The other is called Jeffers (Ivermectin paste 1.87%) The indication for use are as follows.

Exodus------
for the removal and control of mature infections of large strongles; small strongles; pinworms; and large roundworms in horses and ponies.

Jeffers-----
For treatment of large strongles, small strongles, Threadworms, Large-mouth stomach worms, and Bots.

Any of you guys (or gals) ever delt with this stuff? If you have is it safe to use on herps? If it is, what are the dosages by gram weight I should use. Any help would be much appreciated. thanks

I haven't heard anything about those other products but a herp buddy of mine who has been in the bussiness for a long time recomended for me try try "safe-gaurd" that can be purchased at any livestock type stores. I'm not sure the exact dosage and he couldn't give me one. He says he just "eye balls it". I would try about the equivalent of 1/2 table spoon for an adult. The only other thing he could tell me was that he never had any problems with ODing the animals and in that sence it is a fairly tolarable wormer.

Do you have symptoms in the snakes that you want to worm? You should do a fecal or have one done to determine which kind of paracite you need to treat for. Baytril is not a wormer, it is an antibiotic. Panacur, Flagyl, Ivermectin, Droncit and Albon are wormers that we use. There are specific dosages according to the weight of the animal for each drug. Klingenberg's book "Understanding Reptile Parasites" will tell you what you need to know. Good Luck!

Klingenberg happens to be my vet and I know I've heard him express disappointment in Ivomectin for snakes. It might have been fairly new when he wrote that book and it was hoped to be a wonder parasite treatment but he's prescribed Droncit when I've had tapeworms show up. By the way, tapeworms come from feeders so unless you are ready to switch to a cleaner rodent source you can keep going through a lot of expensive Droncit.

I agree with you on the Ivermec. I don't use it much anymore choosing to use Droncit. Droncit is expensive, however the dosages are usually very small.

Yea I realize Baytril is an antibiotic, I was half asleep when I post, sorry lol. Anyway I have been in this business a while and I don't need advise on fecals. All my animals are fine, the only reason I ask is because I get animals in from Africa every year, and just wondering if I could use the stuff I have. If not I have access to everything else, I just like to use what I have access to first. Anyway appreciate the comments guys, so I guess the Apple flavored Exodus is only for the horses lol.
thanks
