Maybe someone could help me out here... PLEASE READ!!!!

Hey,

I've gotta little dilema here, and I kinda need someone elses insight...About a month and a half ago I hatched out a couple of Super Hypo Tangs, as well as a clutch of patternless babies. Up till about last week they were all doing great, then some strange things started happening. I first noticed something was wrong when my two super hypos started loosing interest in their food items (mealies and crix), slowly but surely those two animals have decreased in weight... At first I thought maybe one lizard was hogging all the food, but after seperation I noticed the same symptoms... Runny stools, eating in moderation, and weight loss in the tail / body... Soon after that one of my Patternless animals started acting the same way... I have all three of these critters in their own shoe boxes... Each of their parents are healthy parasite free adults... Tip Top shape I assure you... Recently I've seen undigested crix in my little patternless's shoe box. I dont want to point the finger here, but I recently recieved an order of crickets and mealworms from Fluker farms... And shortly after these bugs arrived I noticed the animals starting to, well for lack of better wording, decline. What are the chances that these guys were parasatized by the crickets I'd been feeding? I recently posted with "Parasites coming from Crickets" as the topic... Another thing thats crossed my mind is that they were exposed to something by their hideboxes... I work at Petco, so I go ahead and hold onto all the deli dishes that we get from the Gourmet Rodent (Bill Brant). And I've used some of these deli cups as the hides for my babies, of course they are sanitized. Do you think it could have been something that came in with the deli dishes??? I'm getting ready to have some fecals run on my little guys to make sure, but in the meantime, has anyone else had this happen??? Any Replies are very, very welcome...

Thanks Much,
Richie

Hmm.. They do sound like they have some kind of parasite. Have your adult leos shown any signs, if not think about what is different from them to your babies. Have they ate the crickets? deli cups so forth. What did you sanatize the cups with? I recived one leo from gourmet rodent that had coccidia. Its best to take them to the vet. I would through out the deli cups, just to be safe and sanatize all of their cages daily. Make sure that you take all things out of their cages too besides hides and food..etc. Just so it makes it easier on you because if they do have protoza, you have to clean and sanatize a grip to be able to try to over come it

Good luck.

sounds to me like I would be finding another supplier for my food. It sounds like parasites to me. I have also heard of bad crickets before. Not really sure what makes them that way but they can make your leo sick I think it is from bacteria or mold in with the crix. I would definately have a fecal done. I don't think the contaiers would have passed anything if you sterilize them.

Hey,

First off.. Thanks very, very much for the timely responses... Yeah I too think it came from the crix. As far as my adults, well so far they are all kicking butt... Man, I hope it stays that way, as my adults have been eating these crix too.Its just frustrating when you try so hard to keep all your animals in tip top shape, and something like this happens. Yep Geeboo, I'm gonna find a new supplier, as of now. I hate to point the finger as I've already said, but I really dont know how else the little guy/gals could've contracted something... Plain and simple.. IT SUCKS... Again, I really appreciate how timely you two replied... Muchas Gracias... (heeh bad spanish but I tried) And I do know what you mean with gourmet there JAG, I've seen many a Gecko sick with coccidia... Just hope mine aren't about to be added... I guess will see tomorrow... Thanks again Jag and Geeboo... I do appreciate it.

I wish you luck. Keep us updated with everything. Stop feeding them the crix though, just to make sure.

Good luck

Well thanks, have not had much time on here lately but I try to help. It is surprizeing that more big suppliers don't get parasitic crix. They almost always carry some kind of worms.

Hey, no problem... And you help, trust me... you help. It is kind of strange... I'd have never believed that crickets could carry some kind of worm... But when you think about all thats involved, it makes a whole lot more sense... I'm thrashing the hides in my sick geckos tanks... Think they'll be okay without hides until I get them treated? The shoeboxes aren't the kind that you can look right through... Or do you think they'll get to stressed without the hideouts?

Thanks Much Again,
Richie

If you sterlized the hides properly they should be fine. Your geckos need hides, especially if they are ill. Anything that increases stress is going to decrease their health.

It's probably just worms, crickets carry them, your older geckos may have them as well but if you are good with sanitation they may just have low enough levels so that you haven't noticed. Young geckos are less resilient.

Get a fecal and if worms show up I would treat all gex, even the older ones no showing symptoms.

I don't think this is a reflection on the supplier, crickets just tend to carry worms. I would try giving them a round of panacur if you know the dosgaes and have a good scale, otherwise your local vet should be able to help you out with that.

If you feed crix regularly it's not a bad idea to deworm every six months or so. If you want "clean" food, you'll have to feed just mealworms (but personally I like to give mine variety).
