Very, very weak flying gecko- help

tazziesmommy May 19, 2003 02:35 AM

I have a flying gecko that suddenly became very, very weak - so weak that I thought he was dead. I went to check on him tonight and he wasn't on his favorite corkbark as usual. I found him laying on the ground behind some other corkbark. When I picked him up, he was completely limp. I thought he was dead, but then he moved his head slightly. I soaked him in warm water and dripped water by his mouth. He tried to lap up some water, but was too weak. He doesn't seem dehydrated though - his skin, eyes and tongue all appear normal and he has been eating and drinking just fine. This happened once before - a few months ago (but not to this extent) and I just held him all night keeping him warm and quiet in the dark and offering him occasional water. Everyone told me to stop holding him and accept that he was dying, but I couldn't do that. I coaxed him through the episode and he was doing great. This time, however, he is much, much weaker. He is completely limp and occasional small movements are the only indications he is still alive. I took him to the vet following the last episode, but he could not find the cause. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to help him?? Any advice at all would be really appreciated. I really love this little guy.

Thanks,
Lisa

Sounds like the vet needs to look harder. Try going to another because this can only be resolved with a personal examination and history. Have you checked your husbandry practiced against the majority of recommendations?

I've had the same problems with this genus. I recommend that if you purchase any form of Flying Gecko (Ptychozoon Sp.) to get it checked by a qualified reptile veterinarian for parasites. Most, if not all of these geckoes are imported with heavy parasite loads & should be treated ASAP.
