adamjeffery Feb 17, 2006 10:42 PM

to get you up to date
i just got 2 new snakes one is infected the other does not appear to have any. they were shipped in seperate deli cups but in the same box so i am treating both as having them. i seperated them out of my snake room and have them in sterile boxes with paper towels as a substrate. i removed the water dishes and cleaned the cages( they have been in them for a total of 28 hours)i did not hold them before holding my others so i dont feel i moved any twords them
i plan on getting medicine tomorrow and treating them and the cages but i have a few questions
1st are my other snakes in danger of getting them even though they were across the room.
2nd do mites fly, jump or am i their only transport
3rd what is the best brand of medicine
thanx in advance

Mites don't jump or fly, but they will walk. They walk up and over things, generally in a straight line, until another host is located. Don't quote me, but I think they can travel 10feet overnight! This would be if conditions are ideal, but you never know. I'd just keep a close eye on your other herps.

As for medications, I don't have a particular brand favorite as I've never had to use them. I do recommend using one that is meant specifically for herp mites and go from there.

Good luck,
Ian

well today after work i went and bought some reptile relief and before i used it i called my breeder to let him know that a snake i just purchased had mites he told me to soak him in water for 24 hours but i did not feel comfortable with soaking it that long.so i soaked him for 7 hours under a watchfull eye. b4 i soaked her i sprayed her with reptile relief and cleaned off what mites i could. i then rinsed her off with water b4 soaking her. i just checked her again and found 1 mite still moving but their are others that are either under scales or in around the eyesthat i dont know if they are live or dead.

how do i get the ones near the eyes off of her?
also in the little fold under her chin?

The soaking (you can also add a drop of dish soap) is great at reducing numbers. Follow the instructions on the reptile relief bottle for eradication of the rest. (I believe it's the fumes that kill the mites, thus if it's washed off right away, it probably won't work.

well the other day i woke up to check on her and i picker up and noticed some dead mites on the papertowel so i checked her over and to my surprise none to be seen with the naked eye. their was one alive in the papertowels so i sprayed it with reptile relief and threw the towels away. it has been 2 days now with out seeing a single mite. thanks for all the advice
