Great Valentine's Day present!

Tracy Barker Feb 18, 2006 08:41 AM

Of course what girl doesn't like Valentine's Day?!
Dave, Tom, and Guy know I love chocolate--and I got some great cards! Then I went to check on the snakes and found this great surprise! A litter from het t+ x het t+, with 19 babies, 7 t+ and 12 66% het t+. Of the normals, quite a few are "pink panthers" (formerly known for one day as "pandoras" which was too similar to "paragon" so I'm officially, really officially naming them "pink panthers".

We think the pink panther appearance is inherited as a simple recessive trait, and is a separate trait totally independent of the caramel-albino gene.

The top pic shows a normal baby with two pink panthers, the bottom pic is the litter, with the normals, pink panthers, and t+. Close-up pics of the t+ when they shed next week-they are really beautiful, but all of the normals 66% have great patterns and colors also.

The T animals are very impressive. It will be ineteresting to see how the pink panther animals develop and color up other morphs. Is it possible that they are also T but are showing less of the defect in melanin production than the more obvious T animals.
Congratulations again.

are a separate thing from the t+ and we actually have some t+ that we think are Pink Panther t+, meaning both, like a double homozygous recessive. I have not bred two of the Pink Panthers together however-so that would be interesting. It would be good to have two of them that you knew for sure were not het t+ and then see what happens when you breed them together--that might yield some interesting results. The pair that produced these babies was a pink panther male 100% het t+ x a female normal 100% het t+.

How many Pink Panthers do you get of the normal looking het babies when breeding a homozygous animalXhet? These reason I ask is that this may be a visual indicator indicator of who is het and who is not.Have you proven any non-Pink Panthers that are normal in appearance from this line to actually be het?Just some random thoughts that came to mind when reading your post.Great litter.

Tracy Barker Feb 19, 2006 07:15 AM

As soon as they shed I'll get the count of normal and pink panther 66% hets. The mom of these is a 100% het and is the most normal looking boa ever--I'll post a pic of her as soon as I can.
I really don't think that all the pink panthers are 100% hets (would have been convenient though!). The main thing is that in a litter where there are 50% or 66% hets, with pink panthers among the normals, I wouldn't see a normal and think "that couldn't be a het" because that would be a mistake!
