hatchling substrate

phishnuts Feb 18, 2006 09:05 AM

I use Jungle Floor and it gets dry to fast and has alot of dust in it. I am looking for something that holds moisture better. Thoughts?

I use moist spagnum moss for both my hatchling and adult box turtles. It's not as messy as other substrates and easy for them to hide in.

PATMAN....where do you get your spaghnum moss? I have been using the peat moss without anything added to it ever since I got my turtles.....and yes, it is awfully messy. anyway....I always bought it by the "bale" as it was way cheaper than the smaller bags. Where do you get the spaghnum? I think I will switch to that for my smallest turtle's cage. ....9 boxies

I use spaghnum moss for my frog. I had been buying Shultz brand it in Walmart's garden dept. then suddenly I couldn't find it.
I like it best because it's not a crumbled up mess like some of the moss I've tried. Then I found that Walmart has another brand in their craft dept. but I don't like it very much compared to what I'd been buying.
Not long ago I found the Shultz brand again at Home Depot. I bought a years supply when I found it.
I was afraid I might not see it again.

Thank-you PHRatz, and PACMAN for the input on where you two get your spaghnum moss. I get my regular peat moss at Home Depot, so I guess I could go there and get the spaghnum also. I had started with the regular peat moss without addatives as that is what I had read somewhere when I first got the boxies. (That you were to use peat moss without anything in it as their substrate.) Anyway, I have a couple of bales of it now, so I am thinking I could mix it with the soil in their pen out in the backyard so the dirt will be easier for them to bury under when they go into their hide-boxes out there. That or I could use it in my flowerbeds. Now I just have to get the energy to re-plant the beds when the weather gets warmer. Ha-ha-ha!.......9boxies

ROFL!! I didn't even notice the error until you pointed it out.
Yes Pacman is a game & it's also the type of frog I have.
Gosh I need a new photo, he's 8 years old this spring & much bigger than he was in this pic.

Here's a link to where I buy my Sphagnum Moss. For $19.50 (plus shipping) you get a very big 3.5 cu ft bale (11 lbs) which last a very long time.

I bought 2 bales a few years ago and still have some left!

Try Luster Leaf brand long-fiber sphagnum moss. Most plant stores have it, or you can do a word search on-line for Luster Leaf moss and the website will come up.
