ReptiKH24 Feb 18, 2006 01:58 PM

one of my geckos that i got in sept of 05' is very aggresive. i can even touch it because it will start waggin its tail and if i touch anywhre close to its head she will bite. evn when picking up the humid hide to put some water in it, she trys to bite me through the plastic. i really dont hold my geckos much. only when cleaning and right after they shed to check for any skin left on them. Should i handle them regularly?

When I got my geckos, my male was very aggressive. I couldn't even reach over his tank to my females without him hissing and snapping at me. I finally just grabbed him and after that he calmed down for me. He actually is the easiest to handle and I will put him on my shoulder while I am cleaning all my tanks. My females are not real snippy, but are a little more skiddish when I first try to pick them up. Once I pick them up they are fine on me. I have had my male and the females he has bread on me at one time. So I think if you can try and hold her as much as you can. Just remember to make sure she is calm down before you put her away or she will think by being aggressive you will put her away. If you are worried about being bit, just use a thin glove to first pick her up. Hope this helps.

Also, if you are afraid of being bit you can wear gloves so you won't feel the bite as much. But geckos recognize you by smell.

I would try picking her up and removing her from her cage. A lot of geckos and other reptiles also are very protective of the environment, once you have them out of their cage, they are fine. She should get used to you. If she does not and she continues to be aggressive it is possible that she might be a "hot" female. This is a female that incubated at 86 F or more. They are very aggressive to you, other geckos and they will not mate. If that is the case just enjoy her from a distance and only handle her when neccessary.

I've also heard and noticed myself that female geckos tend to be less handlable then the males. The females can get moody.
