Questions regaring set up I have

jusmebabe Feb 18, 2006 02:06 PM

This is my first set up and darts. I am getting 7 on Wednesday(Ed's Fly Meat). I have a full glass hood. Do I just place the lighting on top of the glass?
Right now the temp says 58F. How do I get it up to 70F (what type heating)?
The frogs are 4 D. azureus (blue black spots) and 3 D. auratus( Costa Rican green and black).
They will be in separate set ups just haven't put the other together yet.
I am keeping plants to a min til I get the hang of it and see they are thriving.
Is there anything else I missed?
Thanx Joel

Yes, you can put the lighting right on the glass unless the tank temps get too high. Then you need to lift the lights off the glass.

58 degrees? Where are you keeping the tank? I can't believe it is that cold in your house unless the tank is in the basement. I would move the tank to a room that has a temperature around something a bit warmer.

Those are two great species to begin with. You'll enjoy them.

As far as plants, the more the better as far as I'm concerned (more hiding places for frogs and more plants to recycle waste). Plants are easier in the terrarium due to the high nutrients in the soil, high humidity, etc. Pothos and creeping fig are great plants to work with because they grow fast and are easy to care for.

Thanx for the info Josh. Actually the temp is now up to 70f. I guess I should've waited as I had just set the light up. It's on the entertainment center in the living room. Im going to set up my 2nd tank tomorrow so more shopping for plants lol.

Yeah, that temp sounds a lot better. Show us a picture of the new tank when that is setup.

Thanx Josh. I will post the pic of the 10 gal sometime tomorrow. I'm doing it slightly different. This one I spread black silicone on the back and later on the sides. I then sprinkled bed a beast over it. Main problem is plants.Everything I find is too big so I have to find smaller ones. I plan to order from Black Jungle as I can't find any place else that sells them.
My 20 gal long has a Bromelaid I bought at home Depot but none small enough for the 10 gal.
I know I keep going on but this is my first and I'm a little excited.

To get a more layered affect on the background, I would suggest using handi-foam. You spray it on and then you can press the coco fiber in it, make caves or planters, or carve it. Nice stuff.

Hi Joel,
just popped on over from the Chameleon Forum. Here are a few pics of my set up. I don't have the light on top because I was taking pics, but you get the idea. It's only a 20 gallon for my 2 "boys"! LOL.

Here is Beck.. He is the smaller of the two, but he is not by any means shy. He's the first to let me know when he's hungry. Juan is a liitle more Timid but he's alot bigger then Beck and he bullies him around alot too. That's my delima for the weekend...
