Another fun weekend but...

Liann Feb 18, 2006 11:40 PM

I'm learning a lot. Had to take one of my big girls to the vet today. She has been having stinking running poo for a week now and about clearing us out of the house with the odor - this started right after the mite assault last weekend. I brought a sample with me to the vet for a fecal float but Eva decided to give the doctor a fresher sample when she unloaded on me and my sweater - nice... Anyways, turns out she has an "Entomoeba invadens" trophozoite which is giving her some serious Montezuma's revenge. I have to give her flagyl and some antibiotic that starts with a "C" orally for the next week. I have some experience with a stomach tube from feeding premature puppies, but administering meds to a snake that way was a new experience. She was a sweetie though and with hubby's help, we were able to do it without incident. Just another day in the herp world...

On another note, I had Eva wrapped up in a shirt on my lap in the vet office and a lady came over to me and asked me what I had. I tentatively told her it was a python and was surprised when she got all excited and asked to see her. The lady actually started talking to her like she was a cute puppy or something and she even petted her and said she hoped she felt better. NEVER thought I would get a reaction like that! Made my day (although the goo goo talk was a little much).

I didn't have a very similar experience when I visitted the vet last year...

I brought a big girl in a canvas snake bag, and received all sorts of wierd stares. One lady came over and asked what was in the bag, and when I told her it was a python, she said, "Oh!" and went back and sat down. I had empty seats on either side of me, and people were choosing to stand up. Oh well.

Hope all goes well with the snake squirts!

that's hilarious...

i've been lucky with mine...most people want to see what it is anyway...well,so far.

Hey David, here are a few of him at 3-4 months.

This is the only shot i have of him since then...taken yesterday, and i'm hoping he is to busy to bother right now.

Here is a female i traded for...

...and here is a comparison shot.(Dunno when i took it.)He(yours)is a lighter pale yellow, but she is a pig!

This is that same girl with a light normal i hatched.

My experience is even more strange. When I first took my two snakes to the vet, I was afraid of running into someone with a large dog that would bother my snakes. (I've come to the inescapable conclusion that I really don't like or trust dogs.) I bought some plastic tool boxes and used a soldering iron to put ventilation holes on all four sides. I put each snake in a snake bag, put the bags in the tool boxes, and then used a small luggage padlock to close each tool box.

When I walked into the vet's office, I was carrying two toolboxes and told the receptionist that I was there to see Dr. Boucher. She told me to have a seat in the waiting room until Dr. Boucher could see me.

About fifteen minutes later, she called me to the window to fill out new patient forms. As it turns out, they were expecting a technician to come work on their X-ray machine. When I came in carrying tool boxes, they assumed that I was the X-ray guy. When they suddenly realized that "Mr. Kelly" wasn't there for his appointment, someone did some checking and realized who I was.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.
