F2's New Pics

Rick Millspaugh Feb 19, 2006 12:49 AM

I took a couple pics today of the F2 male I got from Mike Bodner. The color is very intense on him and the female F2 (she is the last pic).

These wild-type thayeri are just the coolest snakes, particularly some of the ones Mike produces with that nice orange tossed in from his orange-cheek male. The deep burnt-orange with brown... very nice! This male of yours is exceptionally nice with that great color and his striking pattern, the bowtie saddle shapes and reduced black are a great combination with his ground color. Looks like you got yourself a champion male there and that deep coppery-brown on the female is very unique as well. Excellent wild-type pair!

Great quality pics too by the way, thanks for sharing!

What do you mean when you say "F2"?

Obviously it doesn't have anything to do with gender, since you used it for both male and female...

I'm not the best person to respond to this question, but I'll take a shot. F2 means second generation. In this specific case it means that the snake is two generations removed from a wild caught thayeri. Pretty impressive considering the fact that wild caught thayeri have not been legally imported into the US in about 25 years. Tim Gebhard of Vivid Reptiles was able to get his hands on a wild caught animal through legal means (border confiscation supposedly), and has been producing offspring from that animal. I guess Rick's snake is decended from Tim's wild caught snake, unless there is another w/c Thayeri being bred out there I dont know about.

Thats exactly right. Rick's pair are decendants from Tim's wildcaught female. Here is Rick's pair's mother. She was daughter of Tim's W. C. female.

maybe i am misunderstanding your response, but f2 ,or f1,or f3 for that matter, has nothing to do with how many generations removed an animal is from wild-caught stock...it does, like you said, though, mean 2nd generation...i.e. you can take a 3rd generation captive bred animal(f3),breed it to an unrelated 4th generation captive animal(f4),and the offspring will be f1...many people erroneously think an animal has to descend directly from wild bloodlines to be an f1..not so.

kingaz Feb 22, 2006 10:15 PM

I said that "in this specific situation" in meant that the snake was 2 generations removed from a w/c snake. My response was correct.

kdblack Feb 23, 2006 12:48 PM

Wouldn't that pretty much mean all animals are F1? I mean, they're all first generation from whatever parents...unless you're talking about multiple clutches from the same pairing?

Actu
ally, that is how it has always been explained (many times) to me. P1 or wild descended animals breed for the first time and produce F1 or the first filial generation animals. When that generation (the F1, or the generation once removed from the wild), breeds, it will produce F2 offspring and so on. The way I always understood it was that people could only really use this description when they clearly knew of the history of the animals in question. I don't know, I could be wrong, but thats always how it had been explained to me (not too bright, needed many explanations). Cheers.

I've got an 03 F2 female that looks identical to your female. Here she is last summer. I agree with everyone else, yours is a great looking snake. LOL
