firebelly lighting/heating question...

MindefektNoiz Feb 19, 2006 02:46 AM

is there a regular store brand lightbulb i can use to keep my firebelly nice and happy? i live in the middle of no where and the nearest pet shop is quite aways away not to mention living on a farm the power surges and blows out lightbulbs almost weeky and reptibulbs/other petshop lights are too expensive to buy a new one a week.... i just got the little guy (for 5 bucks!!!) and i have a heat lamp that my old bearded dragon used to use, i know its too powerfull so i keep it about 5 to 6 feet away and only leave it on for half an hour ever 2 hours (it produces about 90 degree heat). i know that the reptibulbs give vitamins, i dont know about regular bulbs, but if the reg. ones dont, what can i do to replace what the reptibulb does? thanks alot in advance! im really excited about getting into toads! they're beautiful!!!!!!!

Your toad would probably do fine with a regular 25 or 40watt incandescent bulb. Which wattage you'll have to use depends on the size of his enclosure. If the ambient air temperature stays between 75-85 degrees the toad should be fine. The water potion of the cage shouldn't go below 60 degrees. There's really not much of a difference between most reptile heat bulbs and regular light bulbs. Reptile bulbs are just more efficient at creating a beam of infrared/heat. With amphibians it's not necessary to use UVB/UVA producing fluorescent tubes unless there's live plants in the terrarium.
Keeping the heat lamp on a good surge protect(if not already) might help any future blackout/surges blowing out the bulb.
