New Display cages.....Opinion Plexiglass? Screen? Glass?

djsreptiles05 Feb 19, 2006 05:03 AM

I am building a new set of display cages and am tring to decided on the door. Until now I have used traditional glass tanks with screen tops for all my displays, but as we all know, this starts to become impractical as collections grow. The display I am building right now is built into the wall with opening fronts(no doors yet...trying to decide what to use). I am using a wood sealer and painting with laytex on the interior with vinyl flooring calked in on the bottom for easy clean up. They will have 2- 3" strips of heat tape (one for belly heat, one for back heat on the rear of the cage). My question is what should I use on the fronts of the cages. I want something to last for a long time and something that there is no danger to my animals. BTW the doors will open like a cabinet door. Any other suggestions are welcome.

I have used glass, plex & acrylic doors on various cages in the past. I prefer glass. Depending on the door size, make sure the frame & hinges can handle the weight of glass when the doors are fully open. Plex & acrylic are also good but you have to be careful when cleaning them. If you use the wrong cleaner they will scratch easily and start to turn opaque from the scrubbing. Also if you are going to silicone the doors as opposed to framing them be sure to get the right type of silicone for the plastic you are going to use.

I would personally use a high grade thick plexiglass. Not the cheap thin stuff that bows. But like the post above says you have to clean it with the correct materials or else it will scratch. Show us some pics when its finished.
