building a cage

herpsRkool Feb 19, 2006 12:11 PM

I want to build my Ball Python a cage that is 4' by 18" by 18" out of Melamine. Right now I heat his 40 gallon tank by using a heat mat/heat lamp, but I know that it won't be able to heat through the Melamine board.

How do you think I should heat it? I was thinking of cutting a hole in the top and covering it with a screen. Then i can use a heat lamp to heat it. The down side I can think of is that he won't get the necessary belly heat. I have heard about heat tape and heat rope but don't know much about them.

Also, what kind of substrate do you think I should use if I can't find a reptile carpet big enough? I was wondering if anyone has used reptile bark and if they had problems? I am also thinking that tiles would be a good choice because they are attractive and the hold heat well.

I am open to all ideas and I'm curious as to what you guys think!

Thanks

Nice cage!... How do you heat it? Would a UTH be able to heat through it? Also what are its dimensions?

Thanks for help

Its heated with a Exo Terra Heatwave Desert Vivarium Heater - 11" x 17" and a Ranco digital thermostat. It is 30"L x 24"W x 12"T.

building vs buying, much to think about.if you have have the basic tools and know how building your own can be fun and rewarding.i might suggest to check out the caging/heating forum as there's a ton of information on this subject.
you can use your heat mat inside of a cage and aspen is hard to beat for substrate.have fun!
