Cup feeding

lola44 Feb 19, 2006 03:19 PM

Hi all, how deep a cup do you use for cup feeding your chams? I use a shallow cup and put in "salad" for him which he eats (i'm already making the Beardie salad and Uromastyx salad so I also feed my veiled some too---helps save the plants in his cage) I'm off to the hardware store tomorrow after work to buy my supplies for building my cage and i had it stuck in my head that i wanted screen but looking at more and more pictures I like the look of the 1/2" wire mesh. When I feed him crickets I always shake them into the cup so they start eating the salad and then the cham eats them from there but of course the crix get out and get hunted down throughout the cage too. I don't think it'll be a problem getting him to eat the crix out of a cup but I don't want crix escaping from the feeding cup. So,, how deep? He's eating large crix now so some are good jumpers. Thanks for your help. Lo
PS If I do get the 1/2" wire mesh do I need the pvc coated stuff or not?

I use a round tupper ware type container, one for lettuce, about 6 -8 inches tall. I put 2 holes at the top of it to affix some wire about 8 inches long. i bent the wire almost 180 degrees about a 1/2 inch up from where it is attached to the container,(i wrapped the wire with black tape so nothing sharp could even remotley be a bother, be sure to trim the wire close)so i can slide it into the cage wire on the side of it, make sure to bend the wire down it shouldnt fall out or off this way, my chamsleeps on it. Some cricks do get away but loss is minimal, hope this helps.

So you mean that the bottom of the container is the height of the container plus 2 inches from the perch?Doesn it swing a lot when the cham steps on it?

Also I'd like to know the diameter and the number of crickets you put each time..

So the cham is wondering around on the perch and by accident sees the crickets below and fires,is that it?
I know that in theory is simple enough but when you try it is not that simple.

Thanks

IS YOUR CAGE IN SIDE OR OUTSIDE?
i sak because if you use 1/2" mesh crickets will get out, no matter how deep your container is. My veil (passed on after almost 5 years) used to eat crickets out of a container about 6 inches deep and about 4 inches wide at the opening. Never really had a problem with them jumping out (maybe hitching a ride on another cricket on his way up to the chameleons mouth and then escaping death.
my biggest issue was ANTS, more during the summer. They would raid the crickets (which were trapped in the container) and rob my poor little veil of a meal. I ended up suspending the container with wire or fishing string (Something my cham wouldn't try to walk on and dabbing some vasoline on the wire/string. That prevented the ants from getting a free meal.
just some thing to look at if you keep your cham outside.
so I'd say 'bout 6 inches deep maybe 7 inches if you put a salad on the bottom and pretty much how ever big round as you want!
Hope I answered your question!
Mikey
