If you're looking for small and tame... go with Ackies... they don't get huge and they can become pretty tame in comparison with any of the other small monitor or monitor type lizards available. You may pay a bit more but you'll be happier in the long run. I, myself, just added a Savannah Monitor to my collection... and there isn't a bone in this little boy's body thats tame in the least.. and I doubt there ever will be.. But I don't mind in the least.. He keeps me on my toes.
they small/tame?
tegus get to be around 3-4' and can usually be tamed. if you want a tegu that will be some what easy to tame, i think that would be the argentina red tegu.

Either the Argentine or the Columbian Black and White Tegu..though they get a bit larger..
I had a fried who had 2 savannah monitors. They need a lot of room (actually a whole room of there own), they are messy, and they can smell pretty bad. The savannahs he had were tame, but I heard that some tegus can be pretty fiesty. Good luck.
varanus acanthurus or varanus storri are your best choices.
