A shedding question.

paricite Feb 19, 2006 08:52 PM

I think my corn was looking like it was starting to shed. It had milky eyes and the head was starting to flake. That started Thursday last week and was that way until yesterday now this morning I get up and check on him and his eyes are clear but his head is still flake and the rest of his body looks normal. I am new to owning snakes so I don't know if this is normal or a problem. I have a UTH, 2 hides, large water bowl, and keep the humidity around 50%.

It is normal for snakes to go clear after going blue right after that it will shed. I usualy expect 2 days after going clear for my snake to shed. its only if after it sheds and has peices of skin left on it that you would have a problem. if that happens then try giving your snake a bath in slightly warm water to loosen the old skin.

Yes its normal. Snakes go back to their normal color for two days or so before actually shedding. Now, what is not normal is for peices of the shed to come off seperately. It should all come off like a glove. if it does not, typically it is a humidity issue (although not always). Just keep an eye on it.

I try to take one day at a time but sometimes several days attack me at once!

give it a soak in a bowl of warm water for 10 minutes, and within an hour or two it should shed. i do this with all my snakes every shed and it works great

I think my snake (the one who regurged) is starting to shed too, but it doesn't look good. Just above his tail area has a weird pinched effect around it where it looks like his body has been squeezed on both sides. His colouring does look very different and his eyes are looking dark (he usually has bright red eyes, now he has dark eyes). I hope this isn't stress from the regurge.

Am I being ultra sensitive here? Snake owning is very stressful.

Thanks for the info and help. The bowl of water worked wonders. About 15 minutes after spending 5-10 minutes in the bowl of water he started to shed. It took about 40 minutes for it all to come off and it came in 1 piece.
