ceylonese pythons

arboreals Jul 26, 2003 11:51 PM

i was looking into ceylonese pythons. They look like mini burms. I love the burms but size is a little large and these guys are sweet. What is their temperment like? Who is working with them? Anyone have pics? Any other information is greatly appreshiated! Thanks in advance,
John

They can be quite a handfull. Though smaller than their related cousin subspecies (burmese) they are often MUCH harder to handle. I still try to tame all of my babies so as to offer "guaranteed tame" snakes. I won't have any of these until next June nearly a year from now. My adult females are stress cases and I let them skip every other year to help reduce any added stress. Indian pythons tend to be a bit calmer than the ceylonese and look very similar. You may want to look into getting some of those within your own state.

If i put the time in will they become calm? Indian pythons are very nice but i cut myself off at 12ft in length. Really anything bigger is larger then what i'd like to work with or i'd be going into reticulated pythons. If not a ceylonese python what gets up to 12ft that is pretty calm. I've seen pictures of calm ceylonese pythons. Let me know as i really like those snakes and i'm willing to put the time in to get them calm. Please let me know,
John

It really comes down to the individual snake. When a ceylonese is a psycho, they often stay that way regardless of any "work" put into them. One of my females is just IMPOSSIBLE and I finally just gave up on it. It was a futile endeavor and I am usually a whiz at taming. And it wasn't really the bites that I minded so much. No. It was the half gallon of urine and fecal matter she would always spray as she would whip the last third of her body. When she was small this was not a huge deal, though very annoying and smelly. But when she got big,.... MAN! I have to admit it,.. she finally won. The male I breed her with is dog tame, so if aggression is hereditary I have her psycho genes diluded with very docile genes too. The kids come out real easy to work with and before long they are laid back. See if you can find a breeder that breeds specifically for tractibility. Tango says that the Baldogos do. Perhaps they produce ceylonese too.

I'm more then willing to wait till next year when you produce more babies. Is there any possability you could set me up with a very calm pair? Please let me know if we can work something out. I'd really like to work with this species. And calm ones if i can!

I tried to answer your email to say it was a go but it came back to me stating that arboeals@hotmail.com address did not exist. I see that you have an email here. Do you want me to write you at that email, or is this post good enough for now?
