heat MAT or heat LAMP for outdoor inclosure?

rudedogsurfrat Jul 27, 2003 12:23 AM

I'm about to build this thing so what should I use?
Should I build an enclosure of wood or dogloo?

Just curious...where do you live that you need heat?

I supplement heat for my box turtles because I live in San Francisco where nights can drop into the 40s. I've had good results with a combo of a Kane Heat Mat (which are water resistent) and a ceramic bulb (100w) in an outdoor housing. They both endure rain and the water hose.

do you keep them out there year round?

Because the SF winters are so piddly, I artificially hibernate them around November/December. Then they return to the outdoor habitat in March or April when the sun intensity returns.
