Rodent Water Valves

sunshineboas Feb 20, 2006 09:59 PM

Can someone point me in the direction of some good water valves for a mouse rack. The ones I am currently using are not flowing properly.
Thanks

The most commonly used valve is the Edstrom Vari-Flo Valve. You can see it at the link below for Agselect.com.

If you are already using the Vari-Flo valve....describe the problem you are having and what you may have done to try to fix it. Problems with the Vari-Flo valves are very easy to fix....such as no water drip, constant water drip, blockages and the rate of water drip.

The ones I have on the mouse rack is the original valve, not the vari flow. The valves are a couple of years old. I took them all apart and cleaned them. I have mice in the rack now and I am worried they are not getting water. Some of the tips are working great, but others have to be played with for a good ten fifteen seconds to get water out. A friend of mine got me some great stainless tips for my rats, but they are hard to come by and about 9 dollars a piece. They are great but way to expensive. Do you think I should replace the ones that are struggling or try to clean them out again
Thanks again

Try taking the valves completely apart, incliding removing the washers. Soak all the parts In hydrogen peroxide for about an hour. Rinse & clean all the parts then put them back together. Adjust the tightness of the needle and washer. They should work fine. Some valves need to be cleaned every six months or so, depending on quantity of rodents, type of bedding, food & water purity. I went ahead and added this onto the line(Since i had to clean them so often.)when they were upgraded to a constant water supply...so far so good.(Since mid-summer)

They have to be checked often in case of any flooding(,but the cleaner the valves, the less that happens.),but it sure beats manual filling.

Klubertanz has Lixit SS water valves for less than half the price you mentioned in your post. They usually have them in stock.
