how well do tegus climb?

Texastrash Jul 27, 2003 02:46 AM

Could a tegu climb a 6' fence? I am turning an outdoor dog kennel into a tegu cage and I wanted to know if I needed to put on a top. I am using plastic chicken wire to make it very escape proof and will try to post some pics when I finish. I was going to attach the chicken wire (note: this is not actually made of wire) so that it goes five foot up the fence and has a one-foot overhang on the bottom. I was planning to leave the top 20 inches of chicken wire loose so if the tegu were to climb it, it would not be able to get past that point. What do you guys think of my idea? I just wanna make sure it will work before I put him in it and he escapes or something!
Thanks
Ryan

the bigger they get the harder it is for them to climb. keep in mind that if they can see throught he fence they will keep tring to get out, thats bad. They can hurt themselves. you need to have a barrier so they cant see out.

That’s good to know. I will put up a barrier so he can’t see out. Thanks for the info. Does any one have any recommendations for plants I can use?
Thanks
