paranoid keeper question...

MdngtRain Feb 21, 2006 10:14 AM

The few times I have fed my crestie crix, I had them in a dish. Each time, the crestie would knock the dish over & the crix would get loose. This time, I'm worried that s/he may have ingested a mouthful of the substrate (eco-earth) b/c she seems awefully listless. She normally hangs out on the glass of the enclosure. Last night, when I got home she was still in her plant. This morning, she was in the same position. I took her out this am to check her over, and she looks ok & moves ok. I'm wondering if I am just being paranoid (the weather has gotten drastically cooler & her tank had a few degree drop -- from 72 down to 67) or she may be impacted.
(The vet has no opening until Sat...)
Anything I can do till then?

if she has a favorite sleeping spot, she may always go back to it when she is ready to go to bed. i have noticed afew of mine will return to the same spot every day. sometimes i wonder if they even move all night but on feeding nights, i always see their food is eaten, so i know they much move at some point to eat.

is your dragon still eating normally and pooping normally/ if so, she should be fine. if she isn't pooping or not eating, then there could be impaction, in which case you will need to take her to the vet as soon as possible.

a suggestion for the crickets, put them in a ceramic bowl. this way the bowl can't be tipped. i use medium ceramic bowls, about three inches diameter and slightly less than two inches high. i buy mine from dollarama, 2 for a dollar and find they are great as feeding dishes.

i have witnessed hatchling-adult sized crested geckos ingesting a full mouthful of eco-earth with absolutely no problems.
this typically stems from the animals being kept on paper towels, and being moved to a more natural substrate.
animals raised on a substrate other than paper towels seem to be more accurate in their hunting skills and don't seem to miss their prey items as often as those kept on paper towels.
as previously suggested, just monitor the activity level, and food intake, and excrement.
if it were sand, large pieces of bark, or small gravel you may have something to be worried about, but the eco-earth and bed-a-beast seems to go down fairly easily when consumed.

I saw her out and about last night. And she ate from her CGD last night. I will try the ceramic dish idea for feeding the crix.
I get so paranoid sometimes that I just need to remind myself that it's most likely normal... and I will know if something is really wrong.
Thanks for putting up with my over-protectiveness =P
