Skunk X Deb eggs are here!!!

bhmorrill Feb 21, 2006 10:20 AM

It has been SO hard for me to be patient about getting this first clutch! Such exciting times! Anyway, this is what I woke up to this morning.

9 good eggs, and unfortunately 7 slugs! I have never had that many slugs in a clutch, so that was a bummer. But this is her first clutch and she was only 1951g just previous to laying, and Skunk was only 18 months when he bred her. So, getting 9 good eggs out of that situation is still good in my book! Have many of you had fertility problems with 18 month old males? Well, our coastal girl was bred by Skunk as well and she should be laying in about 3 weeks, so I guess we will see if we get lots of slugs in that clutch as well. Hopefully not.

Anyway, hopefully next year Deb will have a better clutch, but this is good for starters. Oh, and the clutch was 513g (including the slugs). I haven't weighed her yet, but I will before I feed her in order to get her post laying weight.

Another kind of weird thing about this clutch was that she laid one of the slugs yesterday around noon or so, and then the rest of the clutch sometime last night? I know some of you have had that happen, but it was a first for me. Lastly, here are pics of the Sire and Dam for any of you that haven't seen them before, and for those of you who have seen them before...I promise as soon as they shed out and put a little weight back on I will get some new pics of them!!!
