ID Press: Python Still Missing

Feb 21, 2006 04:45 PM

KIFI (Idaho Falls, Idaho) 20 February 06 Python Still Missing
After almost two weeks, the pet python is still missing in an apartment building in Rexburg.
Pythons can live three to six months without food so it could be alive and dangerous somewhere.
We finally confronted the owner to see what they are doing to help find the snake.
“I’ve got tenants in here that are going to refuse to pay rent because they have a snake living in their building. We just need to get the thing caught,” said building owner Kevin Kennedy.
Chelsea Standford, the owner of this snake, might consider this python on the loose to be her baby, but everyone else can't believe it hasn't been caught yet.
"I want the thing out. I don't care whether it's dead or alive. Let’s do it sooner than later."
Kevin Kennedy, the owner of the building, says now is the time to start digging for the snake but he doesn't want to pay the bill. He says it's the owner of the snake's responsibility.
"If my maintenance guys are doing it, who's paying the bill? You can pay for your plumbers but what about my guys tearing in to the walls?
“We'll take care of the expenses,” Standford said.
You heard it. She said that they'd take care of the expenses that it will take to dig until they find the snake.
"We want the thing out. We have scared tenants. We've got scared business owners. It's not good for business. I don't want my tenants to move out. I don't want them to not pay rent. I need the thing to be gone,” Kennedy said.
But the problem still remains -- there's still no sign of the huge python.
“It could be anywhere in this 57,000 square foot building,” said Kennedy.
We decided to check out the basement because the boiler's heat could possibly attract the python.
We're down in this old building’s basement, to see if the snake is anywhere to be found. You'll see there are lots of nooks and crannies, especially this old coal shaft. The snake really could be anywhere.
Can you imagine living next door to the apartment where the snake got out? This tenant is from Zambia and says he and his wife are scared because coming from Zambia they know first hand just how dangerous pythons really are.
“The mangers told us it might be in the basement so that was comforting, but we still do freak out at night if someone touches the other one and if a blanket touches you,” said the resident.
Tearing up the walls and the floors to get the python out could begin as soon as Monday night.

KIFI (Idaho Falls, Idaho) 21 February 06 Python Found In Rexburg Apartment Building
The 8 1/2 foot python has been found in Rexburg. It was found under the apartment it escaped from.
The owner of the building hired a plumbing company to come in with special cable equipped with a camera on the end.
The 100 foot cable is able to move around the nooks and crannies in the walls and pipes.
The 8 1/2 foot python was found, its eyes glazed because it was hungry.
It was curled up in the ceiling above the shower in the apartment below the owner's place.
The people who lived in the apartment couldn't believe they had been showering with a python for the past two weeks.
They say they're happy to have it out.
Getting the snake out took efforts from police, animal control, plumbers and the owner of the snake and even a rat. They used the rat to lure the snake out from from the ceiling.
Everyone is excited to have the snake out of their building. The building owner says that some of the women in the building that refused to sleep there will now be able to come back and get a good night's sleep.
Luckily no one was injured and the snake is not injured either just a little hungry.
The snake is now in possession of animal control in Rexburg, they say they are taking good care of it and now looking for a new home for the snake instead of an apartment building.

Thats pretty crappy they took the snake. I realize people are scared of what they dont understand but hoestly...it gets pathetic how fanatic people are.
I had a small male Childrens python (pure bloodline from VPI) get out of my apartment when we were on vacation (no thanks to my buddy who left the cage open when he was supposed to be watching our collection. He (the snake) made his way under the front door and downstairs into a 90 tear old ladys apartment. She found it wrapped around her candy dish and beat it with her cane. The police took it away and the animal shelter put it to sleep due to a broken jaw. He was my wifes favorite too. To this day no one in our complex knows who that snake belonged too. I had to find out the details through the back door by playing dumb.
If youre reading this youre probably laughing. Go ahead. I still dont think its very funny but fortunately we picked up another male that has recently fathered a clutch of eggs this month.

And God said to Noah,"Let there be plenty of room for the serpents".

the little old lady who lives next door to me thinks that I'm an avid horticulturist breeding rare orchids in the many terrariums & enclosures I wash out in the back yard. Although many neighbors (and most neighborhood kids) know the truth of my collection, I've decided to let her believe what she will. To do otherwise would be asking for grief of the unwelcome kind.
My condolences on your childreni--I too have a pair who are special to me.
regards,
althea

How about cause it was going into shed? I never heard of a snake's eyes getting glazed due to hunger.

I saw that. It's a shame people who write stories about snakes know nothing about them.

The sadder thing is that that explanation was probably given by the owner

it was found in the ceiling above a shower--a nice, humid, water-pipe warm, moist spot for a pre-shed python to hang out. Smart snake.
