Legality question

Chonubrid Feb 21, 2006 08:32 PM

I posted this in the herp law forum, i'm hoping for help here also.

I'm going off to Florida State University and thus, I am stuck looking for an apartment. I can't find any apartment in the area that will allow snakes. However, the one I did sign with has a clause... they will allow any caged animal EXCEPT for reptiles.

I remember hearing about a court decision saying that a landlord can not discriminate on what type of animals are kept. I was wondering if anybody knows the specific case?

It'd be GREATLY helpful! Thank you!

hadn't heard of it. I am a LONG term Florida resident. To my experience landlords here are pretty well free to ban what they chose.

Of course I once kept 50 snakes in a no pets PERIOD apartment.

My landlord had some intersting questions after I moved out...LOL

I had a landlordess that did not allow fur baring animals, so I never asked. I just kept my boa constictor there. I followed the rules. You may be able to talk to the Landlord. Offer them a little bit more of a security deposit or something. They might make some kind of deal. What do you keep? Good Luck, Derek

Sometimes it's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission. It's not like they are going to be barking or something. As long as your are discrete about it and don't mention it to your neighbors, how would they ever find out. I once heard of someone asking if they allowed aquariums, the landlord said yes...he said cool, I have a couple of those, he didn't mention what's in the aquariums.
