Heat rope?

tattoo72 Jul 27, 2003 06:45 AM

Has anyone in here ever used heat rope? They have it at Big Apple, http://www.bigappleherp.com/Pages/Product/119500.html
I'm building a 4x2x2 wooden cage. I was thinking about routering groves in the floor of it and then covering it with a 1/4" thick piece of expanded sheet pvc. It will be controlled with a zoo med 500R temp controller. Has anyone tried this?

I just saw that stuff myself and plan on trying some soon. What I was thinking of doing is cutting sections of 1/2" pvc, drilling some holes in it and then routing the rope through that. If you get some before I do let me know if you like it, and I'll do the same. I have high hopes for this stuff. ie, the ability to put a heat source INSIDE the cage yet UNDER the substrate.

Animal Plastics uses a form of Heat Rope, it works great. They're currently testing the safety of using it in poorly ventilated spaces (bottoms of cages, without leaving gaps like is required with heat pads)

Just a warning, although quite an obvious one: heat rope has the capability of running VERY hot. Use a rheostat or thermostat regardless of how you intend to use it.

Hello I just built a corn snake multilevel cage with a pegboard back. I ran the heat rope up and down the one side of the pegboard and plugged it into a zoo med rheostat. It works great and the snakes seem to like it. Good Luck Matt
