Bulls living together?

bam171bam Feb 22, 2006 09:16 AM

Can baby bulls be kept in the same cage, or have they been known to be cannibalistic? I know about the whole feeding things and the rest. I am just curious about cannabilism in Pits. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

I’ve caged multiple hatchlings together in the past. I really don’t recommend it. Aside from the multi-poop issue, feeding time is controlled chaos. Sure you intend to feed them separately. But as far as they’re concerned, every time you open the cage is feeding time. Heck, anytime your shadow crosses their line of sight is a potential food situation. And if it really IS feeding time and they smell food ...... one strikes as you open the door, a second and third react and latch onto the first and begin constricting, a fourth grabs your hand and wraps it up, the fifth skinny one that never seems to feed dashes for cover ........... you get my drift. If one nails another right on the head during one of these situations, it will often start engulfing it even before getting it subdued through constriction.

If you do decide to house them together, I’d suggest you keep a bottle of rubbing alcohol handy. You can use the fumes to convince them to release their death grip when they’re trying to subdue their conspecifics during the feeding mishaps.

I've been housing mine together for years and never had any problems (yet). The main thing is seperating them for feeding time. This is a MUST. Also put them in seperate containors BEFORE you handle the rodents or rodent packaging. This might stress them out at first but they usually get into the routine. Many times my female snow has tried to take the rat straight out of my hand the second I crack the lid to feed her. I don't recommend hand feeding bulls though! And there was only one time when she (she has the strongest feeding response I've seen) grabbed another snake as I put him back in their cage. She started to constrict but quickly let go once she realized he wasn't food. There was no blood on him but it still scared me. Putting them back into their shared enclosure at the same time will probably keep that from happening (until they get too big to do that). Maybe just watch for those with a rabid feeding response and house them seperate if you have the option.
