Best field herping in the US this time of year

r&breptiles Feb 22, 2006 02:06 PM

Ladies and Gents,

I have a couple of days off coming over this weekend. I wanted to fly out of philly and land in the very best herping lands this time of year in the US.

I looked at Tucson and it seems a bit chilly, plus no rain for a bit. Thought of Las Vegas, but not too sure of that either. Everglades could be a strong bet. . .

Anyone have a good recommendation? I am more in it for the photos than the collection - I have enough already- more of the hunt than anything. Any place is better than philly this time of year although the Hamburg show is coming up this weekend as well.

Please help!

If they get any rain in southern California there should be stuff under rocks and trash.

r&b,
Do not know where the best place may be. However, Florida is a bit closer to Philly than S. Texas, Arizona, or S. Calif.

We visited with my oldest son and family last week in Ft. Myers, Florida. Last Sat. we decided to do a little herping. We drove around north of town until we found an area with considerable junk by some ponds. It was probably about 81 - 83 degrees and a little uncomfortable for me as an Oregonian so we only made searches for about half and hour. Observed a subadult alligator basking on the side of the pond plus at least two species of turtles. Brown anoles were common. Turning junk, we observed an adult blank racer and subadult rat snake of some species--possibly a yellow rat snake.

Siuth Texas hasn't kicked off yet but is around the corner. Found a western glass lizard and a yearling ribbon snake yesterday, so it is starting, we had a few showers and that helped. Florida's weather looks like it is holding well. I would place my eggs in that basket.

Florida is really waking up lately... Just got a beauiful water snake and a nice pygmy, and saw a nice indigo yearling... It's not in full swing yet... but good
