Just night light with regular bulb on timer?

EricJ Jul 27, 2003 07:53 AM

Is it ok to keep a nighttime bulb on 24 hours a day for heat and then have a regular bulb on a timer to act as day and night? I have geckos and they need lights and an undertank heater to maintain the correct temperature. I asked around before I got the corn snake and everyone said I needed one or the other. Each with their own preferences. i have lights and they keep the warm side at 84. I kindof don't want an uth because I've had them get too hot with the geckos and I've seen the snake burrow under the substrate.

Also, I bought the snake on feeding day(7/26) and i figured she wouldn't eat the first night but I put a pinkie in the cage anyway. I want to make the pinkie available the whole time that way when she gets comfortable with her new situation she can eat. But how do I keep the pinkie from drying up? Its in a deli dish, in the cage right now. Thanks in advance for any replies.

IMHO, which maybe wrong, but I dont think you can keep the same pinkie in the cage with her, and she will take it after 24 hours. I have had alot of feeding trouble out of my Albino, and I think someone on here told me, that after 24 hours the scent of the pinkie, the snake becomes used to it, and considers it part of its enviroment. I would wait a week before trying to feed the snake, especially since you bought it on its feeding day. Good luck!

You can do that, but heat may become an issue. If the room has a window the day bulb is not necessary. About the pinkie you do not need to leave it in the cage. The snake will heat when hungry. Try to give the snake a pinkie in the evening and give him an hour or two to eat it. If the he doesn't you can put it back in the freezer and try again the next day.
