what do they prefer? water or land?

roadfamily6now Feb 22, 2006 04:50 PM

we currently have 4 juvinille red ears in a 40 gallon tank wiht about 30 gallons of water and 1 floating dock. We know that in a few short years maybe even months they will be too big for this.
We want to create a bigger, better environment for them. Do they need or want a greater percentage of water to land?
I think they do but just wanted to get some idea from other turtle people.
And do you think the tank should be large and shallow or would taller be okay? Do they prefer deep water to shallow water?

With RES and other aquatics, I've always given them more water than land. Sometimes the land basically consists of a wedged branch or rock. Nothing with dirt or an actual land separation is necessary and actually contributes to more hassle/dirtiness/health problems.

Just imagine a pond or lake with something jutting out that allows them to bask in the middle of it.
