Johnstud56 Feb 22, 2006 05:05 PM

Just got my new skink, which is an adult, he is hiding underneath his substrate as we speak, Im reading 3-4 times per week to feed him, how many pinkies should I give him a week? Also, what type of dog or cat food? Flavored? Any other ideas are appreciated... also what type of raw meat do you give them? Is hamburger ok? Thanks!!

I'm not an expert or anything but from what I understand, adult Blue Tongue Skinks need more plants then meat. I'm sure someone here will go more into it.

We usually use cooked meats - ground turkey or shredded chicken. I have never heard of feeding raw hamburger.

As far as the canned pet foods - you can feed canned iguana diet, canned snails, canned (cat or dog foods) chicken or turkey. Most of our skinks like the canned sliced chicken with gravy. Steer clear of the fishy cat foods. Avoid the super cheap varieties - make sure that the main ingredient is the featured meat.

Actually, if you give the skink enough protein, you can do away with pinkies. But if you want to feed pinkies - maybe use them as a treat once or twice per month.

Add chopped veggies & greens to the canned food. Occassionally give cooked egg - or mix a beaten raw egg in. You can also give fruits - our skinks like the tropical fruits (guava; papaya, etc.) You can even get that in a can too.

If you want to print out a diet guide, visit the website of BlueTongueSkinks.net - they have an extensive care section and other helpful information.

How many times should I geed him a week?

You said you were feeding 3-4 times, that is good. If he doesn't eat it all, you can offer smaller portions - if he eats it all, you can feed more or give treats in between (banana & berries is a fav treat for ours).

The other poster suggested perhaps using more canned food. I'm sure this is fine, as mentioned, premium foods were recommended. You can go the other way however and provide the carnivorous half of the diet with pinkies and bugs. I"ll feed a pinkie or two a week, with a few crickets or small roaches, and give greens every other day. No cat or dog food usually used, however if short of whole prey I'll toss in some moistened premium dog kibble.
