wont drink

neil_chameal Feb 22, 2006 06:54 PM

my veil chameleon has refused to drink for the past 4 days. I spray down his cage twice a day, creating droplets everywhere, and i even try to hand water him with a water dropper. Are chameleons like other lizards and are able to soak the water through his skin? or does he need to drink it normaly?

Most living beings absorbe water through their skin, but they should be drinking it. even a human could dehyradte living in a pool of water without drinking. In addition to misting, you can add a dripping system to provide a constant source of water. I have an automatic misting system, and I find it takes them a few minutes to react and actually go over to the spraying water to drink it. A long enough shower and they will gain the courage to go over and sip from the foliage.

Haha, well Im young (And I lool even younger) but dont get my caught up with all the mid teeners here. I have a little something on them, if not a little more live experience than most.

As for the little one, Her name is "C"... Shes from one of my first breeding groups that I started with. Ther other two are A, and B. :P Sad isnt it? The male is nicknamed jerkface, and the other female twoface (Because of an eye problem on only one side).

Are you using warm water? Try dripping the water on the end of his nose or on a leaf that is just in front of his nose. It may take some patience....but it might work.

Is he showing any signs of ill health (sunken eyes, sleeping during the day, not eating)?

Chameleons are very tricky and stubborn when it comes to watering and feeding.I don't remember the last time I have seen mine drink but he does fine,he probably has some when I am not around.Of course this doesn't mean you should not pay attention at all.
My personal opinion is that if you mist the cage well a couple of times daily and provide a dripper you should not worry.
If you spend the whole day observing him you could die out of stress before he does from dehydration
