Who would enjoy the pond the most?

beardiedude Feb 22, 2006 08:50 PM

Hey dudes,

I am setting up a pond in my san diego backyard. I already have it dug out. The dimensions are 6 feet long and 4 feet wide. 2/3 of the pond is 2 feet deep. The remaining part of the pond is a shallow are with a depth of about 8 inches. My main question is what turtle would do the best in this pond? I plan on adding lots of plants into the pond so is there and carnivorous/omnivorous turtle that would fit in to the is cage?

I will post pics soon! Any opinons would be great!

There are TONS of displaced red-eared sliders for adoption, I'm sure that any branch of the California Turtle & Tortoise Club, the American Tortoise Rescue, or any number of groups in southern CA would jump at the chance to adopt out a RES (or two or three) to such a pond. Just make sure the area around the pond is fenced-in to be escape-proof, and make sure predators can't get in. I'd recommend going with all females or all males, so that we don't end up with more turtles needing homes.

See i am totally willing to adopt a RES, but i plan on adding plants to my enclosure and as far as i have heard RES will reek havic on them! Would i be able to keep 1 RES and 2 map turtles or would the aggresion of the RES get out of hand and stress out the maps?

If maps wouldnt work why? I am open to ideas. Thanks for the post!

P.S. I have adopted a little, malnurished beardie 3 months ago! I love to adopt so i guess maybe i should consider adopting some RES
