Foods that are toxic to White's dumpy tree frog?

hkcronin Feb 22, 2006 08:51 PM

Hi, new tree frog owner here, was wondering if there are any foods that are toxic to them? I put about a dozen crickets in for him to eat, but I also put in an orange food square (store bought) suppose to have vitamins and minerals and moisture for the crickets to eat so that they will stay alive until kermey (my tree frog's name) has a chance to eat them. Just want to make sure the cricket's food isn't toxic to the frog....Thanks Heidi

Hey Heidi!
Whites are great fun so congrats on the new pet!

As for foods that are toxic.. How about we talk about what you can give them instead of what you cannot.

Crickets, roaches, beetles, worms, moths, some spiders are all fine. Also, with adults, you can give them an occassional pinkie mouse as a treat. The orange square should be fine if it is designed as cricket supplements. You can also use a piece of vegetable in there. The frogs will leave it alone, but even if they did not, it wouldn't hurt em.

How big is your frog? One thing you will have to watch with the whites.. they will get obese fast if you keep alot of food in their tank. They will eat everything you put in front of them. So.. a dozen crickets at once is not really the best way to go about it. If you have 1 adult.. I would put 3-5 in its tank every other day.. that will be more than enough.. or you can do 1-2 every night..

Anyways.. there are several whites owners here.. and all are great people that are very helpful.. so.. if you have questions.. ask away..

Tim

Hi Tim, thanks for the info....my white's tree frog is just a baby, (I think) He's not very big, he fits in the palm of my hand and he is not fat at all (I think he's kinda thin) but the store said he's not that old. I asked a pet store what they feed the crickets and they said fish food flakes, boy was I surprised...they also said to put a large potato peel in if I wanted to. The orange cube is in a jar that is specifically for crickets...it says complete cricket food...food, water, and vitamins. I do have one more question...I have a heat light on the top of my terrarium for heat but it was alittle to close to the polyfoam rock background (he's in a 18x18x24 in exo-terra terrarium) and the top melted...Is there any non-toxic paint I could use to cover up the melted part that won't hurt the frog? the melted part is about 3 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide. The rock background is beige and the melted part is black, so it looks a little funny. Thanks again for the help!
