new geckos acting strange

desertkingsnake Feb 23, 2006 12:33 AM

2 days ago i fed my geckos some waxworms i got from petsmart. they seemed to like it and ate about 6 or 7 each. Ever since though they've been acting strange. They haven't been eating their crickets and seem to take no notice of them. They just want to lie down and sleep.I don't know if it's because of the waxworms but it's my best guess.

The only other thing i did different was yesterday i tried to feed them outside their cage. I put them in the 20 gal aquarium in my living room that i moved my box turtle out of. I noticed i hadn't cleaned it out very well and there were still pieces of the bark from the turtle's hide under the cage carpet and water spots on the side where she splashed in her water bowl. When i fed them in the tank it only had a cleaned piece of cage carpet in the bottom of it.

What could be making them act like this?

I Feed my Geckos every 4 days. They dont seem to be interested in taking any prey any time between feedings so if you fed yours just 2 days ago I would give it another few days before worrieing. Also I have learned that if you have a way of feeding it should not be changed. For example I use to feed my old Burmease Pythin right in her cage. She never even hissed at me but for no aparent reason I started feeding her in a box out side of the cage and that was when she started biting. Hopfully somone ells can help as well as I am still learning

LOL, my first thought was you overdosed them on wax worms . That many wax worms at a time may very well have just filled them up. Wax worms are usually only given as a treat or to add weight to a weak or thin gecko, as they are very fatty. Give them a couple days without, and try crickets again.

When are you trying to feed? Remember leos are nocturnal and sleep through the day. Also in new environments animals tend to either hide or explore and are not usually interested in food. Like others have said just give it a few days then offer crickets after lights out.

Their lights are set to go off at 6:30 PM so i usually feed them at about 7 or 7:30 to give them time to wake up.

I noticed something really strange about them a few days ago. Behind their front arms they have these holes, almost like armpits except they're a little too deep. At first i thought they might breathe out of them but i researched it and i saw a few posts somewhere saying that leos have lumps behind their arms that store fat and as a gecko gets thinner they go away. So if my geckos have pretty deep holes behind their arms are they too skinny?

they don't look that skinny. i know that you can gauge a leo's health by it's tail thickness and their tails are about 1" thick with the female's being just slightly thinner at about 3/4"-7/8". It's probably just a combination of my paranoia about my pets and my being slightly OCD but i just wanna make sure.

The little armpit like areas are normal and are called mite pockets. They are found in a few different taxa of lizards.
