How's this for a yearling?

My little female Daisy. She is around 5' right now. A real promising Boa if you ask me.

I HAVE LEARNED THE HARD WAY THAT "POWER FEEDING KILLS". IN THE LATE '70'S, I POWERFED SEVERAL COLOMBIAN BOAS IN ATTEMPT TO BREED THEM ASAP. THESE FEMALES ALL DIED PREMATURE DEATHS. A BOA SHOULD BE FED ONLY AFTER IT DEFICATES ITS PREVIOUS MEAL. THIS IS ONLY NATURAL. A BOA IN THE WILD DOES NOT GO SEARCHING FOR FOOD UNTIL IT DEFICATES. WHY WOULD ANYONE PUT A BOA IN A CAGE, AND THINK THEY COULD FEED IT EVERY FEW DAYS, WITH NO ILL SIDE EFFECTS? I'M NOT TRYING TO DOWN YOUR POST. I'M JUST TRYING TO SAVE A FEW BOAS. I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU AND OTHERS THAT ARE CONSIDERING POWER FEEDING.

Does feeding once every 14 days apply to Power feeding? I have been feeidng her once every 14 days from month 3. She hardly ever poops. She uses all food intake for growth.

I'VE RAISED HUNDREDS OF BOAS AND HAVE NEVER HAD ONE GROW THAT LARGE IN ONE YEAR WITHOUT POWERFEEDING IT. YOU MUST HAVE A VERY SPECIAL ANIMAL THERE. AT THIS RATE SHE WILL NO DOUBT BE THE LARGEST BOA IN CAPTIVITY VERY SOON. BETTER HANG ON TO THAT ONE!

Marcel Poots Jul 27, 2003 02:02 PM

Yes, she is. Most of the time when she is in shed I even do not feed her. Like this weekend she should have eaten but shi is in shed. So next weekend I will feed her when it is 21 days since she has eaten. If I would have been power feeding wouldn't she have a major pinhead?

THAT WERE GROWN TO 5-6FT. IN ONE YEAR HAD RELATIVELY SMALL HEADS. IN FACT, YOURS LOOKS TO HAVE A SMALL HEAD IN COMPARISON TO HER GIRTH, IN MY OPINION. IF YOUR BOA IS TRULY A YEARLING AND HAS ONLY BEEN FED EVERY 14-21 DAYS, THEN SHE IS OBVIOUSLY AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE. I AM NOT TRYING TO ARGUE YOUR POINT, JUST MERELY STATING MY OPINION.

Shes A Sweetheart.....I think I have her sister here with me...

And i Mean that literally..I have an almost identical Boa...and she is a whopper too...well over 4 ft and THICK and she is just over a year old as well....

And FAR from power fed....Every 2-3 weeks since she was about a month old....

SABIEN Jul 27, 2003 06:54 PM

Correct me if I am wrong, but a yearling at 5ft is flooring the gas a bit much....nice looking boa but enjoy raising it.

Just my 2 cents

I have had more reactions like this one and I have been thinking about stunting her to please everyone. LOL, I am sorry, It has almost been three weeks since she has eaten today..

Letal liver problems are reported in boas who had been fed once per week during a certain time.

I assume that your feeding schedule on the boa is even more frequent.

With a feeding regimen like you obviously have applied on the boa you will decrease its life expectancy significantly. If you don't give her a brake for a few months now and afterwards apply a reasonable feeding schedule (1 medium sized prey item every 2 - 3 weeks) she will not life to see her 7th birthday.

And this would be a shame since it is a beautiful boa. Don't make that mistake again. Many of us made this mistake, but most of us didn't knew better. You know better now.

She feeds every 14 days. Every now and then when she is in shed I skip her so she will eat after 21 days. I have been feeding like that when every since she was 3 months old. She never poops and just uses all food intake (two rats in one meal) for growth.
