breeding albinos

ruhroh Feb 23, 2006 02:17 AM

I was told that breeding albinos, even two different kinds of ablinos, makes for weak geckos. What is the reasoning behind this? Is it just from experience? Is it just to avoid inbreeding the same geckos too much? I just don't see how mating a vegas albino with say a blizzard trempur could bring about more expression of recessive traits if they come from different lineages. Anyone know of any reading on this? Thanks

Well it doesnt work like that really. First of all, the different strains of albino do not match up genetically. So if you bred a Tremper albino to a Vegas, or a Bell to a Tremper, you would produce normal looking babies that are double hets for the two strains of albino. And when you breed albinos together you don't get weaker babies, as long as breeders are outcrossing their albinos, their wont be any problem with weak animals. Besides, animals will inbreed in the wild with no ill effects and it has been done in captivity with no ill effects for generations before the outcrossing has occured.
