Red Iguanas at Petco?

wowgeek Feb 23, 2006 06:23 AM

Does anyone know anything about them? They have two at the local Petco, $100 a piece. It's a typical Petco though, so the poor little guys still aren't being housed or fed right. Still, their coloration beats any I've ever seen in an iguana. Does anyone know if it lasts though? I've kept beardeds for several years now, and I know as they age some seem to get more colorful, others less. Prior to these, the most beautiful ig I had ever seen belonged to a former neighbor. He was a large adult male, very thickly built, and during the mating season he would develop brilliant orange hues. But these guys are very small yet, and everything but their stomachs is this dark red coloration. I hate to support Petco for anything beyond dog food and the occasional toy or leash, but on the other hand, I think I could at least give one of the little guys a good home. I know personally, that otherwise, they'll be sold under the table by a certain employee or two, for a quick $50 to the first person to walk up and show interest. A very close friend of mine aquired his snake this way, and I overheard a manager discussing someone stealing a parrot I was saving for. I don't know what became of the poor parrot, but hopefully he ended up in as good a home as the ball python did.

I know you'd give them a good home, but please don't buy from petco. When there are very few live animals going out of a store they stock less, and perhaps if they *never* sell those iguanas (they will) or they take a very long time to sell, they won't stock them again. I know it's a rescue, but those igs will be replaced with others-- and you can't save them all.

I got one of the red iguanas at Petco and mine (named Nimrod or Nim) is doing well. Depending on where he is in shedding, his color varies a LOT!!! He can go from an almost orange-red to a very dark red-brown. Normally Nim is somewhere in between. I'd say his coloration reminds me of a copperhead snake.

If you check back over past posts (sometime around the first part of Dec. 2005) I posted about him and conditions at the Petco where I got him (they were surprisingly good). Attached is a pic of him a few days after I got him (sorry for how dark the pic is...I didn't get a chance to make it better and show his true color better). Since then he has grown like a weed. He is intermediate in tameness compared to others I have owned. He doesn't run away or try to bite, but he is nervous about being picked up. He hates "the other iguana" in the mirror in my bathroom.

Nice! Please keep posting pics as he/she grows. I'm curious to see what an adult "red" looks like.

I have just posted this elsewhere, but what the hey. I took this last weekend. He was very relaxed and his "redder" colors were showing up nicely.
