Question about digestion - a little nervous

Liann Feb 23, 2006 09:11 AM

I just acquired a new girl (Albino BCI) last week (Tuesday). She is an 05 born around Aug. I let her settle in and on Saturday I offered her a very small rat pup, which she took without hesitation. I left her alone to digest and checked up on her Monday night. She still had a lump from the rat, so I left her alone. As of last night (Wed.), she still looks like she hasn't digested her pup. I've never seen digestion take this long before. She has a hot spot of 90 degrees and the ambient temperature in her tub is right around 80 - 82. I have not handled her at all because I am concerned about a regurge. I have all sorts of ideas in my head - impaction, parasites, etc... I did get her from a reputable breeder, but had planned to have her checked out by my vet once she had her first defecation. Just wondering in the meantime if anyone has ever seen this? Am I overreacting, could she just be preparing to have the mother load of defecations?

That's funny. I have an 05 female albino that does the same thing. I fed her Saturday and saw the lump on Monday just like you. I haven't had her TOO long. I gave her a rat pup a few weeks ago and then let her digest for over three days, but she regurged the mostly digested pup the day after I fed her. It was hard for the vet and I to even tell that it WAS regurge, but we both decided that it was in the end. She's tested negative for parasites a few times now (never tested positive). I'm not sure what it is either. I gave her a dose of metronidazole to calm her stomach and then gave her 2 weeks before I fed her again. Now, I just feed her small things and have been giving lots of time inbetween meals. Also, I don't really handle her. Not sure what's going on. The guys that sold her to me had her eating rat pups once a week.

I also have a female 05 B.c. Longicauda that does something similar. If I feed her an adult mouse she will regurgate it. So I raised the temp to about 90F on one side of the enclosure and feed her 2 or 3 large fuzzies instead and it seems to be working fine.

I would try a smaller meal...

My girl hasn't regurged - YET. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that when I get home she is going to have somehow completely digested her food and not look swollen anymore. With my luck though... we'll see. I plan to try feeding her fuzzies from now on until she is better acclimated to her new surroundings. And she is scheduled to see the vet next week.

Here is how she looks today. Keep in mind she is a rather small girl and from the bulge she has it looks like she swallowed a small rat not a little fuzzy/pup.

I have an 05' Female Anery that does the same thing. Feed her a smaller meal next time. Mine will eat anything you put in the cage so I have to be careful. It takes her a week to digest about anything. Good luck Let us know what you find out.

THANK YOU! That makes me feel better. I have been a wreck today worrying about her. I keep peeking in her tub like somehow she is going to look normal in an hour. She is still going to the vet next week and getting screened for everything, but at least I can rest a little easier in the meantime. I will definitely move her down to fuzzies for a while. My bp's are all eating large pups and they are about her size, but I guess their metabolisms just handle it better.

Husband just called me to tell me that the snake was "laying in her tub dead all emaciated looking etc.." Got me all upset and then as he continued to describe her, I realized he was talking about a regurge. He hadn't turned the lights on and mistook it for a badly decomposed snake (biology expert he's not) . So, I'm going to have to give her a break for at least a week or more and then try a pinky. I am still surprised she had a hard time with that pup though (if you could call it a pup, it was more a slightly larger fuzzy) because it was really small. She didn't even show much of a lump at first until after a few days. I guess I should have given her more than 4 days to settle in before feeding her. Lesson learned the hard way. I just hope no permanent damage has been done.

Sorry to hear that, Amber, but by no means take that one to heart. Just give her small meals and some time (and maybe some metronidazole) and keep on keepin' on. I know how it is, though. My little albino is so pretty-it just sucks that we can't really play with her...
Hey, would you mind sending me a PM and let me know where you got her?

cbreps Feb 25, 2006 07:23 AM

amber, by the looks of the pic i would say it was just too large of a meal. i usually select a prey animal that will barely "show" on the snake (the girth of the prey animal to not exceed the girth of the snakes mid-body) , or 2-3 much smaller prey animals, which they probably digest easier anyway. hope this helps, john yocum
