western hog nose clutch size....(& other breeding questions)

jessikaowl Feb 23, 2006 12:03 PM

Wanted to try here as well, I can't seem to get an answer so far....

I was wondering, on average, how many eggs a large female western hognose will have in a cluch? It will be her first one but she is HUGE (I'd guess approx 500-600 grams), just wanted some info as to what to expect.

Also, for those who have bred them, is it true that they will lock up (or not lock up if she's not interested) in about 30 minutes??? I hope so, we are excited to see that almost right away!

Another question is, must we put the female in the males enclosure or is it just as sucessful to put the male into the females enclosure?

Thanks for any advice... I'm good at breeding ball pythons but I just couldn't resist trying hoggy's!

Jessy

Smallest viable clutch for us has been 2 eggs, 5 laid, largest 28 viable, 30 laid. Average for that size female is probably around 13-15 for us but I'd have to check my notes.

Lockups...I have produced westerns for 5 years now and until this season I've never seen them lock up. This year I have witnessed tons of aggressive breeding and lockups constantly but I can't say it is within 30 mins.

I rotate my males through the female's cage but that is what works for us.

Good luck this season.

I have had clutches from 6 to 44(800g female!!) but average is 16 to 25.
I think its down to personal beliefs but i always add the male to the female, and Ive had no problems. The funniest one was last year, i put an albino male in with a normal female, she instatly went round and round her enclosure with her tail in the air and her vent well and truly open......i Guess she was ready lol!!
