Russian Rat Question

hevychevy427 Feb 23, 2006 03:36 PM

In a post farther down, I saw where the responder mentioned that Russians needed no outside or external heat. Is this so and if it is what is the temp range needed...should an under cage heat be used.
I have purchased a 4'X 2'X 14" cage with under tank heat installed. I am going to install a flour. tube light. Can a Russian live in something like that?
Thanks
Nancy

Elaphe schrencki needs heat just like any other snake, it just needs less heat than most ratsnakes. If it doesn't find a place to cool off, it becomes hyperactive and may go off feed. So if you keep it just like a Eastern Fox Snake, you'll be fine. Elaphe schrencki is about the easiest snake to care fore, if you just don't overheat it and give it enough space to enable it to choose it's preferred temperature.

Nancy,
I currently have my Russians at 70F and they recently copulated for me. I keep them at room temp year round as long as it doesn't rise above 80f. These guys don't like it hot. I would say that if your room is normal temp, your flo. light should be all the heat you'll ever need for Russian. Let me know if you have any questions about them.
