new owner question

mindlessvw Feb 23, 2006 04:12 PM

I am having some difficulty with a very particular eater. I have tried just about everything and all he wants to eat is Mazzurri tortoise food. I suspect(since he was a rescue) that he wasn't given much of an option and may be used to only that. I am going to begin scenting vegetables and see if that works. Does anyone else have any suggestions

Can we start by identifying "just about everything"?

I think every uro has different taste, just like humans, but here are a few of Bruce's favorites: endive, parsley, turnip green, bok choy, fresh peas.

Hope that helps.

AHA!! No mention of real greens, not collards, turnips or mustards. These should be a staple. Also offer Dandelions (flowers & leaves), Hybiscus (flowers & leaves), Nasturtiums, Hollyhock Mallow, Bok Choy, Clover, Bean Sprouts & other assorted items found on any care sheet. Add to that a well rounded seed bowl. No reason your Uro should refuse food as long as temps & environment are up to snuff.

Hi,

Interesting that yours loves Mazuri and most other uros turn their nose up at it. You can try using one of those mini electric choppers and mix a small amount of salad and veggies chopped fine and add it to the Mazuri, mixed well. Hopefully he will eat it and then you can just change the amounts, gradually adding more veggies/salad and less Mazuri. At least he is eating, because if he was not, you would have a much bigger problem. Good luck!
