Questions regarding tank I'm setting up...

jusmebabe Feb 23, 2006 09:15 PM

I have a 3'L, 17"h,and 18"w which is about 50 gal. I plan to use it down the road once I have learned the ropes with my D. azureus and Dendrobates auratus ( Costa Rican green and black) (soon to come). I am planning to house P. terribilis (mint) in it. My questions are:

1. What would be a workable sex ratio?
2. Would finding food be an issue due to tank size?
3. Is plexi/lexan a suitable top instead of glass?

Thanx for any input.
Joel

>>1. What would be a workable sex ratio?

You'll be hard pressed to find sexed individuals of the terribilis. I would just get a few and see what the ratio you get is and then trade from there.

>>2. Would finding food be an issue due to tank size?

For younger frogs, maybe. If you seed it with springtails and isopods, you should be fine. The frogs will learn the feeding routine and where the flies magically come from the sky.

>>3. Is plexi/lexan a suitable top instead of glass?

I have strayed away from the plastics due to fears of warping. Glass is pretty cheap. I can't imagine you would save too much by going with a plastic.

I'll just add the fact that I've never seen a P. terribilis starve to death because it couldn't find the food, even in a large tank. They are not shy frogs, and will always know where the food is dumped--immediately. Other than small froglets, you would have no worry about them finding it, even in a rather large tank. They are great in groups, and while mated pairs are difficult to find, and they are hard to sex, a group will get along and pair off, perhaps. Get some and just watch them. If you want to breed them, watch and separate the obvious lovers to a smaller breeding tank. Otherwise, just enjoy them.

Thanx Josh and Patty. Didn't know they were difficult to sex. I'm actually just impressed with there look.
As for the plexi versus glass I can get plexi at home depot but the glass they don't sell. I'll check in the phone book for glass shops.
I'm going to set the tank up and have it ready when I decide t get more frogs.
This is worse than keeping chamleons. 2 tanks and already looking for more lol.
Good thing is my wife doesn't mind because they take up less space and look naturalistic (the tanks).
And for the record I have been reading lots of info but like to run it past you guys so hope you don't mind

With a tank that wide and long, the lexan you get at Home Depot will be warped in a few days.. You can get glass at Home Depot and Lowes too, it is meant for picture frames, and is very thin, but would work. Most descent sized cities will have several glass shops that can help you out too.
